Reasons & philosophy behind running, staying active, healthy & fit.:At first, my sole motivation for running was weight loss, and although I managed to shed around 50%, I struggled to maintain my routine. However, when I resumed my running regimen, I discovered a newfound love for it. By remaining disciplined with my diet and consistent with my training, I was able to achieve significant weight loss and drop several clothing sizes, going from XXL to M. I came to realize that this journey is a process, and the more effort you put into it, the more remarkable the results. After each run, no matter the distance, I felt a sense of accomplishment that rejuvenated me for the day ahead. In today’s society, where an unhealthy lifestyle can shorten one’s life, having a healthy and fit body is crucial for longevity.

What is it to be a #fitsian?:Becoming a Fitsian transformed my life completely. In college, I was a junk food addict who constantly snacked and struggled with my weight, which had ballooned to three digits. My clothes didn’t fit, and my belly was shapeless. I often wondered why I was this way. Eventually, I decided to take control of my life, but the journey was challenging, and I faced multiple failures and insults from naysayers.

However, a ray of hope came from Coach Kay, who provided me with guidance and support. Though I sometimes failed to follow his instructions, the journey was like a steep hill, with multiple setbacks and work-related injuries. But I persevered with a strong will.
Thus, being a Fitsian is not merely a hashtag but an emotion.

Reasons & philosophy behind running, staying active, healthy & fit.:In my college days, I was a gym freak. However, after completing my studies, I moved to Virudhunagar, where I, like many others, gained weight following marriage and having kids. Due to the lack of a proper gym, I ran casually to keep my weight in check.
In the early days of running, completing a 10km run in 70 minutes felt significant. However, after consistently running for a few months, I discovered various other health benefits.
Moreover, running became my “me time,” which I didn’t want to miss. In December 2013, I made my debut 10km timed run at the Chennai Marathon, and I haven’t looked back since.

Reasons & philosophy behind running, staying active, healthy & fit.:After trying my hand at various fitness activities, running ignited a new passion and drove within me. It helped me rediscover myself in a way that the other activities did not. While staying fit and healthy is one of my goals, I also aspire to inspire my daughter to teach the discipline of fitness into her daily routine.
Previously, I was a regular smoker, but I have quit smoking since January 2017, and I attribute my success entirely to running.

The journey has been incredibly fulfilling, but two experiences stand out: my first Comrades finish (10 hours and 45 minutes) and the Malnad Ultra 110 KM race (18 hours and 25 minutes).
My 1-3 years health/fitness/running goals:My goals for the future include completing a full marathon in under four hours, continuing to run Comrades and striving to achieve a sub-10-hour finish and training for a 100-mile run within the next 12-18 months.

Reasons & philosophy behind running, staying active, healthy & fit.:Running, to me, is the complete metaphor for life. As I reflect on my journey thus far, I realize that I have rushed through life, often missing its meaning and purpose. Like in the running, I have started many marathons with empty dreams of achieving an even emptier number, only to feel lost and unfulfilled.

But, with the guidance of Coach Kay, I have found meaning in my running journey. He has not provided me with meaning but enabled me to find it within myself. With all its twists and turns, life now feels like a different journey as I learn to look within, find strength, reflect on the course, acknowledge my vulnerabilities, and find the right pace, breath, and step to move forward with deep strength.
Running, key accomplishments… HIGHLIGHT significant events, distances & PB times – which are your boasting rights:I have completed 24 Full Marathons, the fastest time being 3:49 outside the Queen’s Residence in London. In addition to that, I have conquered three mountains, including Munnar, Malnad, and Ooty. Although I’ve lost count of how many half-marathons I’ve run, I will never forget the time when my Garmin stopped at 16, and I had to meditate my way to the finish line through the charming streets of Copenhagen with a time of 1:43:24. For me, endurance is more important than speed. Endurance allows me to explore the depths of my being and push myself to new limits, rather than just racing to complete a 5k. Life is a marathon, not a sprint!
Key running/fitness milestones since joining the Academy:I achieved my record for the half marathon distance and continued to improve my performance in the full marathon. My times for the full marathon have been 4:43, 4:27, 4:03 (twice) and 3:49. However, I still have a long way to go and hope to keep improving, with gratitude to a higher power.
My 1-3 years health/fitness/running goals:Qualify for Boston in 2021 and do my PB at Boston in 2022!
Hobbies:Running
Reading
Listening to Carnatic Music
Observing the journey of life
What is it to be a #fitsian?:To be a Fitsian is to be close to oneself; one’s deepest questions; highest peaks; most difficult questions, most demanding goals; maximum potential.

Your Name:Sujatha Rajesh

Running since:2015
With the Academy since:2018
Reasons & philosophy behind running, staying active, healthy & fit.:I run because I can. I have been an athlete in school, representing my state in the school nationals. I am a Nutrition student, completing my master’s in Foods & Nutrition—a potent combination for a lifelong pursuit of fitness and wellness. However, family and work let this passion take a backseat, but for a lone foray of 2 years in my mid-30s, to acquire a black belt in Karate. When the human children grew older, I built another brood of canines at home that needed care. I realised then I was losing myself in all of these worldly activities. Then the running bug bit me, and here I am.
Running, key accomplishments… HIGHLIGHT significant events, distances & PB times – which are your boasting rights:Doing my first full marathon Wipro Chennai 2018 & doing my first Ultra on a hill were my most significant running milestones. I never dreamed of attempting an FM, and I demolished that WALL. OOTYULTRA 2018 was the most unforgettable run-vacation ever. I am not a fast runner due to my breathing issues and find it challenging to sustain pace over longer periods but I can run a mean 100-200 mtrs.
Key running/fitness milestones since joining the Academy:I took a long break from the academy after six months owing to many personal and professional challenges that took my time away from running. I would say that COVID-19 has instilled a great deal of discipline for home workouts in the absence of outdoor running and camaraderie that we miss the most.
My 1-3 years health/fitness/running goals:For a woman nearing 50 and the associated health problems with advancing age, it’s critical to remain healthy and fit. To that effect, whatever it takes.. if it means motivating several others to take up fitness for health, that would remain a constant reminder to me of my goals, so be it. I love inspiring people, but the proof is when they bite the fitness bullet and be consistent. I want to repeat another FM, but not until I am fully trained to take on the rigours of the event. Until then, I am happy with the Halves and the 10ks.
Hobbies:Running impromptu fitness challenges with friends, family, and colleagues
I love tailoring, but eyesight is a problem.
Vidoegraphing my daughter’s music albums
Feeding stray dogs in my neighbourhood.
What is it to be a #fitsian?:Inspire and be inspired.

My passion for running continued with my first Half Marathon in December 2017, my first 30K (Ooty Ultra) in April 2018, and my first Full Marathon in September 2018. However, I faced injuries due to a lack of strength training in my regimen.

Reasons & philosophy behind running, staying active, healthy & fit.:I used to be just an ordinary guy until I stumbled upon running by accident. I used to brag to my wife about running while walking on a treadmill. Everything changed when she signed me up for a 10k run and challenged me to run as long as possible. In 2019, I finally achieved my goal of finishing a half marathon in under 2 hours. The running bug has been with me for over five years now. I have completed four full and numerous half marathons, making 10k runs just training runs. As a diabetic, running helps me stay healthy and control my weight. Reasons & philosophy behind running, staying active, healthy & fit.:I have been running my entire life, thanks to my father, an enthusiastic runner, cyclist, skier, and football player. Since I was five, he would take me on early morning runs, regardless of the weather conditions. We even won a few relay races together as a family. However, as I grew up, I became self-conscious about being different and stopped running. It was not until my school’s rigorous PE program, which included Olympic sports such as track and field, gymnastics, and skiing, that I realized my lack of running skills. I struggled to complete a 3km run in the required 18 minutes. It was not until I was 13 and had enough that I started running every morning during summer break, cycling to the beach, or rollerblading in the afternoon. When I returned to school, I was among the fastest and was even invited to the track team. This was the beginning of my active lifestyle.

Although being active made me happier, stronger, and more confident, I never considered racing until I accidentally won a 12K race in Venezuela. Then I started training and competing for the municipal government club, winning several half marathons and 10Ks. It was not until I moved to the US and joined a local running club with a marathon training program that I realized I could run a marathon. A stress fracture almost derailed my first marathon in my femur, but I bounced back the following year and ran my record.

Since then, I have run numerous marathons, overnight relays, ultra runs, and shorter-distance races. I run for the challenge, fun, running community, and physical and mental health. Most importantly, I run for the memory of my father and for my daughter, who I hope will find joy in running as well.

Reasons & philosophy behind running, staying active, healthy & fit.:A few years ago, I wouldn’t say I liked running on roads as I believed it would hurt my knees. I also questioned the enjoyment of running for extended periods. However, after walking almost every day for over a year, I found myself drawn to running after participating in the Chennai Marathon 32Kms. Since then, I have become a regular runner.

What I enjoy the most is exploring the city or admiring nature (if running outside the city), engaging in conversations with strangers or myself during the run, and gaining valuable insights about life.
